Boston, MA – Woman Comes Forward with Sexual Abuse Allegations Against Roman Catholic Priest
Boston, MA (March 22, 2022) – A woman has reached a settlement agreement with the Archdiocese of Boston after coming forward with accusations of sexual abuse against a Roman Catholic Priest that taught at her high school in Massachusetts.
According to reports, a woman who is now in her 60s has come forward with sexual abuse accusations against the priest, the late Rev. Michael J Regan.
Reports show that Regan was accused of sexually abusing the woman multiple times between 1977 and 1980 when she was between the ages of 14-years-old and 17-years-old while attending the Pope John XXII High School in the Everett area.
Reports show that the teen was threatened that she would not be able to graduate if she refused to engage in undisclosed sexual acts with the priest. Regan taught economics at the high school, which has since closed.
Regan, who passed away in 2020, has not been previously accused of sexual abuse in the past.
The woman and the Archdiocese of Boston have since come to a settlement agreement that is reported to be in the high-five digits.
The Long-Term Effects of Institutional Child Abuse
Sexual abuse of any nature can be traumatic. This is particularly true in instances when it is performed against children. Children are often threatened and told that they will face severe consequences if they tell anyone that the abuse is taking place. As a result, many victims do not come forward about their abuse until several years later, if ever.
Many victims are forced to suffer in silence with the immediate and long-term effects of child sexual abuse. These can be both physical and psychological.
Some of the potential physical effects of child sexual abuse include:
- Physical injuries to the sexual organs and/or other parts of the body
- Unplanned and unwanted pregnancies
- Heart disease, cancer, obesity, and other chronic health conditions
Many victims often deal with psychological effects as well. These can include:
- Depression
- Anxiety
- Eating disorders
- PTSD
- Cognitive impairment
- Relationship and intimacy issues
- Engaging in self-harm
- Increased risk of substance abuse
When people are sexually abused as children, there is a significant chance that they will suffer from some type of sexual abuse later on in life as well. When victims are harmed as a result of institutional sexual abuse, they must seek the assistance of a sexual abuse lawyer in Boston as soon as possible. Victims often have legal options available that can help them obtain compensation and gain a sense of closure.
