Major Lawsuit Filed Against Harvard University Regarding Sexual Harassment
Boston, MA (February 8, 2022) – A group of female students has come forward and filed a lawsuit against Harvard University that accused the Ivy League school of ignoring allegations of sexual harassment against a professor for several years.
In January 2022, Lilia Kilburn, Amulya Mandava, and Margaret Czerwienski came forward and filed a lawsuit against the school regarding their failure to address reported instances of sexual harassment that they were subjected to by Professor John Comaroff.
Reports show that the three students were among a group of students that had reported kissing and groping instances performed by Comaroff without their consent. Further allegations show that the professor made several sexual advances toward the students and threatened to sabotage their careers if they complained about the acts.
For years, students have come forward to report Comaroff to Harvard officials. Despite several warnings, the college watched as Comaroff retaliated against multiple students to ensure they would have problems securing jobs.
In January 2022, Comaroff was placed on leave for the spring semester and was barred from teaching required courses. This action comes only after finding that Comaroff engaged in verbal conduct that violated the sexual harassment policy and the professional conduct policy of the university.
Neither Comaroff nor Harvard Officials commented on the lawsuit.
Victims of Sexual Abuse Are Often Threatened
According to statistics, nearly 13% of all college-age students report experiencing rape or some type of sexual assault through physical force, violence, or incapacitation. Nearly one out of every ten women have reported experiencing some type of sexual assault within the last year alone. These instances are occurring at an alarming rate. However, very little is done to protect students subjected to these traumatic events.
It is all-too-common for victims of sexual abuse to face threats of retaliation if they come forward regarding the type of abuse they were subjected to. For this reason, many victims go on without reporting the acts for several months or even years after it occurred.
